The Commandery in Worcester holds a captivating blend of history and mystery, with numerous ghostly encounters reported by both visitors and staff. From sightings of a spectral cavalier roaming the corridors to eerie sounds echoing through its halls, the ancient building seems to harbour echoes of its past.

Visitors have described chilling experiences, including sudden drops in temperature, unexplained footsteps, and a pervasive sense of unease. With sightings of a ghostly monk, mysterious clattering of armour, and the haunting sound of a weeping woman near the Preacher Room, the Commandery’s reputation as a haunted site is firmly established.

Venue History

The Commandery in Worcester, England, holds a rich history dating back to the medieval period. Originally constructed in the 11th century, it served as a monastic hospital for pilgrims traveling to the shrine of St. Wulfstan at Worcester Cathedral, beautiful wall paintings from the 1500s can be seen on the walls of The Commandery today. Most of the building dates from the late fifteenth century and is of timber framed construction. The Commandery was one of the last monastic institutions to be dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540

During the English Civil War in the 17th century, the Commandery gained prominence as a pivotal location. It became the Royalist headquarters during the Battle of Worcester in 1651

In subsequent centuries, the Commandery underwent various transformations, serving as a private residence and later as a school for girls. In the 20th century, it was extensively restored and opened to the public as a museum, offering insights into Worcester’s history and showcasing exhibits related to the English Civil War.

Today, the Commandery stands as a testament to Worcester’s past, providing visitors with a glimpse into its medieval origins and its significance during one of England’s most tumultuous periods. it displays six different periods of history, focusing on the characters and stories that affected The Commandery itself at those times. The periods covered are, Medieval, Tudor, The Civil War, Georgian and Victorian.
